Debt Collector Scams
Debt collectors often use questionable tactics in order to collect money owed by debtors. Recently though, two debt collection companies are running a scam to collect money from people who do not even owe a debt.
In Missouri, Attorney General Chris Koster has filed lawsuits against Portfolio Recovery Associates of Virginia and Professional Debt Management of Kansas City.
Portfolio Recovery Associates buys old debt and discharged debt from other collection agencies and they have repeatedly try to collect from the wrong consumers and for the wrong amounts.
Professional Debt Management uses illegal collection tactics such as leaving voice messages stating that there is an emergency. They also try to collect on accounts that either have already been paid or that are the wrong consumers altogether.
