The number of lawsuits filed against debt collectors for violating the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) is on the rise, rising 30% from May to June of this year. In June, there were 848 lawsuits filed. This increase is one that has been seen throughout the last few years.

Since 2007, the number of FDCPA lawsuits has been on the rise, and growing rapidly.

2007 – Approximately 3,230 cases

2008 – 5,383 cases

2009 – 3,654 cases so far and expected to reach 7,000

Harassment by debt collectors is against the law. Know your rights. Credit and debt collections can be extremely complicated and many attorneys will offer a free case review because in the event that you do have a case, their fees will be covered by the offending collector.
